Off-Season Head Coaching Vacancies

With the NBA Finals over, the NBA has set its sights on the various Head Coaching vacancies around the league. Assuming former Cleveland Cavaliers Head Coach, Byron Scott, is hired today by the Clippers, then that will make nine new NBA Head Coaches for the 2013-2014 season. As for the teams that still have vacancies, they are: Memphis, Denver, Philadelphia, Los Angeles Clippers and of course the Doc Rivers situation. In this article, I will give the team that has the Head Coach vacancy with some background on the coach that was fired, and then also discuss who the team could hire.

Memphis Grizzlies

The Grizzlies have clearly made some questionable moves to their roster this past season.  A move that many of us fans probably can't understand, but nevertheless seemed strange, was when they traded their franchise player, Rudy Gay to the Raptors.  It may have been because of the luxury tax. Like I said we as fans don't know.  But again, what team does that? That situation is over and irrelevant now. However, they have recently made another questionable decision to their roster. On June 10, 2013, Head Coach Lionel Hollins was fired by the Grizzlies. Why? Well Hollins did have some qualms with the front office and vice versa. If that is why he was fired, then that is very unfortunate. Hollins is a great coach; he led them to their first ever Western Conference Finals appearance this past postseason. Clearly the Grizzlies have made some questionable moves to their roster this past season. Why? Because the front office didn't care for their outstanding Head Coach or franchise player.

Hire: George Karl

The Grizzlies have expressed interest in former Denver Nuggets Head Coach, George Karl.  If the Grizzlies are looking to win, then Karl is the guy to take.  Even though Karl and the Nuggets were knocked out in the first round by the Warriors, Karl is still a great coach. He was Head Coach of the Year this season, and a coach doesn't get that honor for losing.  His career coaching record is 1887-1131(.599). With this record, Karl can get any head coaching job he wants in the NBA.  If the Grizzlies change their ways and don't give off a persona that makes them seem like they only care about money, then Karl can bring them to another Western Conference Finals appearance.

Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets didn't necessarily "fire" George Karl.  The term at the time was that both sides agreed to "part ways". What team parts ways with the Coach of the Year? That team would be the Nuggets.  Essentially the Nuggets let Karl slip away. The Nuggets and Karl had a good relationship. And  with that the team looked like it could make a solid playoff run this year. Maybe Karl wanted a fresh start. Maybe the Nuggets wanted a new face. I don't know but this whole situation was strange and still is.

Hire: Brian Shaw or Lionel Hollins

There have been reports that the Nuggets are interested in hiring Hollins or Shaw to become their new Head Coach.  If they are looking for a young face, a guy that is making his way up, then the hire would be Shaw.  Around the league, Head Coaches like Phil Jackson and Frank Vogel and many others have vouched for Shaw and praised his potential head coaching ability. Currently, Shaw is an assistant coach on the Pacers. But if the Nuggets are looking for a guy that has a reputation of no nonsense and demands the very best out of his players, then the hire is Hollins.  Hollins is an enforcer everywhere he coaches; that is just his coaching style.  At the end of the day, it just depends which guy the Nuggets want to hire, but either one would be sufficient for their team.

Los Angeles Clippers

Chris Paul is at it again.  He didn't get along with Byron Scott in New Orleans. End result: Scott was fired.  In Los Angeles, he probably didn't get along with Vinny Del Negro. End result: Del Negro was fired too.  Paul has obviously made it known that if the Clippers don't keep him happy, he is leaving.  It is not good to let any player on your roster play general manager, even if Paul can make better roster decisions than the front office.  If the Clippers want to keep Paul though, unfortunately I guess Owner, Donald Sterling better let him.

Hire: Byron Scott

Today there have been reports that Scott and the Clippers are in final negotiations and it looks like he will be hired today or tomorrow.  But remember the Clippers have a point guard by the name of Chris Paul who doesn't necessarily get along with Byron Scott. This isn't a stupid hire by the Clippers; the Clippers can hire whoever they want. Also, it's not like Scott is a bad coach.  It's just that when it comes down to it, will Scott last five days with the Clippers?

Philadelphia 76ers

Doug Collins wanted out. Yes, O-U-T of the 76ers franchise.  He resigned this past season and he isn't retiring either.  Collins wanted nothing to do with the 76ers franchise.  Everyone could see he just couldn't get a hold on the guys on the roster.  He couldn't get them to play well. He couldn't get them to do anything. Yes, Collins wanted O-U-T of that franchise and never wanted to come back.

Hire: Till After the Draft

Awhile back there were reports that the Sixers wouldn't report to the media who they hired as head coach until after the draft.  Clearly the Sixers are in somewhat rebuilding mode with their coach and players. It's just why till after the draft to say who you hired? That question remains to be answered.

Doc Rivers

This has been the biggest story of the off-season thus far.  Rivers doesn't want to stay in Boston for many reasons. He doesn't like Rondo and Rondo doesn't like him, he may have had a fight with Danny Ainge, he wants to have a relatively young team.  Rivers had a chance to leave and coach with the Clippers. But those negotiations have died down.  If Rivers doesn't find a new coaching job that isn't Boston, at least us fans will get to see a great and I mean great saga with Rivers and the Celtics(especially Rondo) once the 2013-2014 season starts.

During the off-season, there are always head coaching vacancies.  Teams are rebuilding all the time.    With the jobs that are left, all of them will be occupied by the start of the season.
